Are Your Words Building Bridges or Burning Them?

If you’re a Christian, you’re held to a higher standard

I refer to those outside of my faith as non-believers or unbelievers, because those terms reflect where they stand in relation to my own religious beliefs. Those two words are respectful and self explanatory.

I’m very intentional about avoiding derogatory or mocking language, about anyone or any group, there simply is never any need for that.

As Christians, we’re called to be Christ-like, not to resort to name-calling, mocking, or belittling others. So, before speaking about those who believe differently, I encourage you to consider whether your words reflect Christ’s heart.

If you use the word “Christian” anywhere in conjunction with your name or introduction to another person. You are voluntarily signing up for higher expectations, whether you like it or not.

Online and in my personal life, I hear all sorts of comments, snide remarks, and terminology that are meant to be insulting, both in tone and meaning. From Christians, no less.

Honest Question Time

Did that make you feel better?

Did you feel a little bit more holier saying that derogatory word?

Feel like you're doing God’s work, digging in those insults?

Think I’m going to end there, because ya know what I’m getting at.

You don’t have to condone the sin, but watch your words, because your sins are no better than anyone else's.

Be the better person you are called to be.

Be Christ-like.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Eph 4:29
